This obligation arises from a provision outlined in Proposition 22, a controversial law that categorizes gig workers as independent contractors instead of employees. Proposition 22 offers gig workers limited protections and benefits, and now it demands that these companies make back payments to cover the outstanding vehicle expenses. The total amount of reimbursement could potentially reach millions of dollars, impacting the financial landscape for both the gig workers and the companies involved.
